Dr. David Kimbro, Associate Professor, Northeastern University, USA

Abstract

A significant amount of research has evaluated how predators can cause changes in prey traits (“fear” effects) that have substantial impacts on the prey, other species, and even ecosystem properties. In this talk, I will share how my laboratory has evaluated fear effects to demonstrate its importance in natural settings. Because the literature on the ecology of fear continues to grow exponentially, I will conclude this talk by considering what has been accomplished to date across a diversity of taxa and ecosystems. This seminar will highlight the necessary research approaches for moving the study of predation risk forward so that it can be rigorously tested in the field and applied to management and conservation challenges.

Bio

Dr. David Kimbro is an Associate Professor at Northeastern University (Massachusetts, USA), where he conducts basic ecological research and teaches undergraduate and graduate level courses in Ecology as well as Experimental Design. Dr. David Kimbro’s research examines the effects of the environment, predators, and humans on coastal ecosystems. His research has been used by the National Park Service of the United States to design conservation and restoration strategies in California and has appeared before the U.S. Supreme Court to help resolve interstate conflict over natural resources.
